Joint Examination Video Guidance
This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your competence in examining the major joints.
General Guidance
- The examination should be carried out on an appropriate couch in a well-lit room, such as a GP or hospital consultation room.
- You should have the full consent of a non-injured volunteer.
Your examination should be well-structured, systematic, and unedited, with continuous commentary on the structures being examined. Marks for edited submissions will be capped at 40%.
You should demonstrate competency in examining a single joint comfortably within 10 minutes. A single joint video must not exceed 15 minutes (or 30 minutes for two joints).
- One unedited video per joint is recommended.
We strongly advise watching Dr Mark Hutchinson’s joint examination videos on the BJSM Education website before submitting your own.
- Using a mannequin does not adequately demonstrate correct hand positions and manoeuvres. Your examination must be performed on a willing, pathology-free volunteer.
Content
The examination should include the following elements (order may vary based on preference):
1. General Static Biomechanical Assessment
- Posture
- Alignment of hip, knee, foot, etc.
2. Observation
- Scars
- Bruising
- Wasting
3. Palpation
- Systematic: work your way around the joint
4. Move
- Active
- Passive
- Resisted
(These movements can be combined.)
5. Special Tests
- Appropriate to the joint being examined
6. Functional

Marking Rubric
Grade | Structure | Competency | Commentary |
---|---|---|---|
Distinction | Logical flow and excellent systematic progression with excellent time management and comprehensive coverage of all required elements | Unedited video Excellent hand positioning and technique Excellent execution of special tests and handling of ‘patient’ with attention to detail in all manoeuvres |
Excellent ongoing commentary with clear explanations of anatomical structures Excellent integration of functional assessment |
Merit | Logical flow and systematic progression with good time management and coverage of required elements | Unedited video Accurate hand positioning and technique Good ‘patient’ handling with strong attention to detail |
Clear ongoing commentary with good explanation of anatomical structures Good integration of functional assessment |
Pass | Basic logical flow with adequate transitions and time management, meeting most of the required elements | Unedited video Adequate hand positioning and technique Satisfactory ‘patient’ handling with reasonable attention to detail |
Adequate ongoing commentary with good explanation of anatomical structures Basic functional assessment |
Condonable Fail | Meets pass criteria but video has been edited | ||
Fail | Poor flow and organisation with disjointed transitions and significant missing of elements | Poor hand positioning and technique Inadequate ‘patient’ handling and lack of attention to detail |
Poor or absent commentary with inadequate explanation of anatomical structures Insufficient functional assessment |
