Joint Examination Video Guidance

This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your competence in examining the major joints.

General Guidance

  • The examination should be carried out on an appropriate couch in a well-lit room, such as a GP or hospital consultation room.
  • You should have the full consent of a non-injured volunteer.

Your examination should be well-structured, systematic, and unedited, with continuous commentary on the structures being examined. Marks for edited submissions will be capped at 40%.

You should demonstrate competency in examining a single joint comfortably within 10 minutes. A single joint video must not exceed 15 minutes (or 30 minutes for two joints).

  • One unedited video per joint is recommended.

We strongly advise watching Dr Mark Hutchinson’s joint examination videos on the BJSM Education website before submitting your own.

  • Using a mannequin does not adequately demonstrate correct hand positions and manoeuvres. Your examination must be performed on a willing, pathology-free volunteer.
